Nothing is impossible for those who work hard. Pelican Khumalo has been working as a taxi driver in Gauteng for the past several years.

However, his colleagues and passengers had no idea Khumalo was working towards his dreams. In 2015, Khumalo enrolled for a degree in education at the University of South Africa (UNISA).

Briefly.co.za learned that Khumalo graduated on Tuesday, 12 November, with his degree.

He told Staffroom News:

“When I started studying ABET certificate I was already a taxi driver. Through the money I earned I was financing my studies and taking care of my siblings.”

Khumalo completed Grade 12 at the Eqinisweni Secondary School in Ivory Park. He revealed his Grade 9 teacher, Mr Enoch Shishenge, inspired him to pursue a degree in education.

After matric, Khumalo enrolled for a higher certificate in Adult Basic Education and Training (ABET). It was while he studied towards the certificate that he started working as a taxi driver.

According to Khumalo, he’s not done studying:

“Teaching to me is the labour of the heart. I love it and wish to get a job do what I love the most. My future plans are to continue with my studies if I can find a bursary. I want to study up until I obtain my PhD in education. I may have started small but I know that I am going far.”
